Lao History:
Officially Lao people’s Democratic Republic. Land locked country situated in the centre of the Indochinese peninsula of Southeast Asia. The country maximum length from northeast to southwest is about 1050 km (650 miles).
Laos is bordered on the north by China, on the northeast and east by Vietnam, on the south by Cambodia, on the west by Thailand and on the northwest by Burma (Myanmar). The Mekong River forms the boundary with Myanmar and the greater part of the boundary with Thailand also. The capital is Vientiane. Area 236.800 square km (91.429 square miles).
Laos is mountainous with more than 90 percent of its land more than 180 m (600 feet) above sea level; northern Laos is more mountainous and is deeply dissected by narrow, deep river valleys running generally northwest to southeast. Several mountain ranges rise to about 1500 m (5000 feet) in elevation and the country highest point is mount Bia (2.818 m).
